The EMEDUS project conduct its second Experts Panel Meeting in Rome

The second Experts Panel Meeting of the European Media Literacy Study (EMEDUS) will take place on 6 and 7 March at the headquarters of the Istituto di Recerca Eurispes in Rome. This Italian partner will host the event, organized in collaboration with the Department of Communication and Education.

During the session EMEDUS partners will share the main research’s findings and will advance on possible recommendations on the subject during two days of work and exchange of views.

José Manuel Pérez Tornero, director of the Office of Communication and Education and coordinator of EMEDUS, will present the results of European curricula analysis on media literacy at the group of the European Commission experts in Media Literacy. The meeting, which was attended by a representative of each member country, will take place on 3rd of February in Brussels.

The purpose of this meeting is to continue working in the coordination of European policies in the field of media literacy through sharing experiences, studies, results, etc., and thus encourage critical thinking, the use of media in education and conservation of European cinema heritage.

The Department of Communication and Education introduced the projects European Media Literacy Education Study (EMEDUS) and Showing films and other audio-visual content in European schools (FilmEd) in the conference "Media&Learning" (Brussels) and "Public Policies in Media and Information Literacy in Europe" (Paris).

José Manuel Pérez Tornero, director of the Department and principal investigator of EMEDUS and FilmEd by the UAB, presented, along with other researchers, the preliminary results of EMEDUS project and shared the development perspectives of FilmEd project, which is in its initial phase.

Media literacy is very much in the ascendant in European regulatory and policy-making circles at the moment. For instance, the European Commission is due to formally report – for the first time – on media literacy levels in all European Union (EU) member states by the end of 2011. The report, provided for by Article 33 of the EU’s Audiovisual Media Services Directive, is being awaited with much anticipation.

The title of this article1 poses the central question it will address: in light of relevant recent regulatory and policy developments, can it now be argued that media literacy has lost its shrinkingviolet status in the regulatory framework governing the European audiovisual media sector?

As an employee from the public sector, Alfonso Morales considers that they have been made some progress in the field of media literacy. Even they have seen that there is greater coordination with the various initiatives to promote media literacy.

The objective now, says Alfonso Morales, is try to move policy forward in an efficient way. "These initiatives are essential for ensuring a higher level of democracy in European societies", affirms Morales.
